Volunteering Your Time Can Help You and Others

If you want to do something good with your extra time, why not volunteer to help other people. There are plenty of people who are less fortunate than you, even if you have things rough right now. Rather than assume that you can’t do anything about it, or that someone else will help those people, you may want to get involved and do what you can to make things better for them. Volunteering can also help you feel better about yourself, because you’ll be doing something good for people who don’t have a lot and can be buoyed up by your presence and your concern for their lives.

Volunteering makes you appreciate the little things in life so much more than you might otherwise, which is a great way to see the beauty and the value in the kind of life that you have – and would like to build on in the future. The sense of satisfaction you get from helping other people is strong, and it’s valuable. Finding places where you can help out isn’t that difficult, either. You can check out Canada 411 for a great way to locate volunteer services near you. Search for “charities,” and you’ll get back a lot of information.

With the phone numbers, addresses, and descriptions you can get, you’ll have the chance to decide which ones sound like the best options to you. You can also consider taking a look at the map, so you can see which opportunities are the closest to you. If you find close choices, you can volunteer more regularly than you could if you lived further away, making it more convenient for everyone involved. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider charities that are farther away if you really want to volunteer there, but it’s always good to have options.

Volunteering for The Salvation Army

When people think about The Salvation Army, they tend to envision a person ringing a hand-held bell next to a red charity bucket suspended with chains from a stand during the holiday season. They also might think of a band playing with everyone dressed in uniforms. The band has to have a tuba. Today’s Salvation Army is more than this.

Coordinating Volunteers

The Salvation Army coordinates its volunteers through a web site named Volunteer Match these days. This is an excellent place for people who want to volunteer but don’t know where to start. Searches can be done on location of the opportunities and keywords. The number and kinds of volunteer opportunities are vast, so something is bound to appeal to the prospective volunteer. The services of Registered Nurses (RNs) are always in demand and so are nutrition counselors for seniors, along with tax advisers. These volunteer positions are not necessarily with The Salvation Army, so a broad array of experiences can be found.

Signing Up Nonprofits

Volunteer Match also allows other nonprofits to sign up and post their recruitment needs. This is how the prospective volunteer can explore organizations other than The Salvation Army, and this makes Volunteer Match pretty much agnostic. The idea isn’t about recruitment into a particular religion, but helping people who are in need.

What Else than Soup Kitchens?

If the volunteer wants to work directly with The Salvation Army, there are many more opportunities to be found than serving out meals at soup kitchens. The Salvation Army works to find missing persons, aid in disaster relief, rehabilitate prisoners, administer youth camps and even to teach music. Well, of course. The Salvation Army is famous for its bands that always seem to include a tuba. This is not a full list, so the prospective volunteer should research what else The Salvation Army has to offer.
